5 children unresponsive after car crashes into frigid pond in Minneapolis suburb; driver OK

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. – Authorities say a car veered off a rain-slicked highway ramp in suburban Minneapolis, landing in a nearby holding pond and trapping five children underwater for several minutes until a tow truck could pull it out.

The conditions of the children haven’t been released, although a St. Louis Park city spokeswoman says said they were unresponsive when they were pulled from the car Thursday morning.

State Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske says the children — ages 1, 5, 5, 6 and 7 — were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.

The 23-year-old driver made it out on her own as the car sank and was in stable condition.

Roeske says the driver’s relationship to the children wasn’t immediately known. Names have not been released.
