NEW YORK, N.Y. – Prolific author and longtime New York Times journalist Herbert Mitgang has died at age 93.
Lee Mitgang says his father died Thursday at his New York home from a recent onset of pneumonia.
Herbert Mitgang spent decades at the Times starting in 1945. He left for a brief period in the 1960s before returning for another stint that lasted into the 1990s.
During his time there, he served in a range of positions, including the deputy editor of the Op-Ed page and book critic.
He also was the author of more than a dozen books, including one that looked at government files compiled on prominent authors such as Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams.
Mitgang also is survived by his wife, a daughter, two sisters and three grandchildren.
