Winning Okanagan water documentary’s theme is universal

KELOWNA – A documentary with an Okanagan connection that evokes a universal theme recently won a prestigious industry award.

Jiri and Lucie Bakala, the husband and wife production team of Ascent Films Inc. won the Award of Excellence from The Impact DOCS Awards Competition for their documentary titled “A River Film", according to a media release.

A River Film was produced for the International Joint Commission along with the Washington State Department of Ecology and the Okanagan Basin Water Board.

The film describes the transboundary management of water resources in the Okanagan/Okanogan basin and Osoyoos Lake.

It presents perspectives of all water stakeholders including water managers, farmers, First Nations and scientists, presenting themes that are universal and applicable to other transboundary watersheds across the U.S. and Canadian borders.

The choice of Bakala’s film was made from documentaries entered from 30 different countries, and judged by qualified award winning professionals in the film and television industry, the release says.

“The judges and I were simply blown away by the variety and immensely important documentaries we screened. Impact DOCS is not an easy award to win. The goal of Impact DOCS is to help winners achieve the recognition they deserve for their dedication and hard work,” Impact DOCS Chair Rick Prickett says in the release.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
