Kelowna West byelection: What you need to know

CENTRAL OKANAGAN – Advance voting begins today for the Kelowna West byelection which is scheduled for next week.

Here’s what you need to know.

To be eligible to vote in the Kelowna West byelection, you must be a resident of the Kelowna West electoral district and be 18 years old or older on Feb. 14, 2018, when the byelection is scheduled for.

Five candidates have declared they're running in the riding recently vacated by former B.C. Premier Christy Clark.

They are Shelley Cook, B.C. NDP, Kyle Geronazzo, Libertarian, Ben Stewart, B.C. Liberal Party, Robert Stupka, B.C. Green Party and Mark Thompson, BC Conservatives.

Advance voting begins today, Feb. 6, and runs until Sunday, Feb. 11. Find a list of the voting places here.

You can also find a voting place close to you by using the Elections B.C. online application.

Hours at voting places are generally  8 a.m. to 8 p.m. All voting places are wheelchair accessible.

Voters must bring their "Where to Vote" card and identification with them when they vote. Find a list of acceptable identification here.

Elections B.C. will update advance voting turnout each day on their website.

John McDonald

John began life as a journalist through the Other Press, the independent student newspaper for Douglas College in New Westminster. The fluid nature of student journalism meant he was soon running the place, learning on the fly how to publish a newspaper.

It wasn’t until he moved to Kelowna he broke into the mainstream media, working for Okanagan Sunday, then the Kelowna Daily Courier and Okanagan Saturday doing news graphics and page layout. He carried on with the Kelowna Capital News, covering health and education while also working on special projects, including the design and launch of a mass market daily newspaper. After 12 years there, John rejoined the Kelowna Daily Courier as editor of the Westside Weekly, directing news coverage as the Westside became West Kelowna.

But digital media beckoned and John joined Kelowna.com as assistant editor and reporter, riding the start-up as it at first soared then went down in flames. Now John is turning dirt as city hall reporter for iNFOnews.ca where he brings his long experience to bear on the civic issues of the day.
