Tips from the public lead to arrest of suspected Kelowna thief

KELOWNA – Tips from the public led to the arrest and charging of a man police say robbed and assaulted a store employee last month.

Mitchell Jakku, born 1984, was already facing charges of theft under $5,000 and drug possession for an incident last December, when, on Feb. 1 of this year, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says in a news release that the warrant was issued for a theft and assault in the 1900 block of Harvey Avenue shortly after 4 p.m.

The suspect fled the scene but within 24 hours, tips from the public led to an arrest. Jakku now faces a charge of assault as well as another theft under $5,000.

“Valuable tip information, from members of the community, contributed to the advancement of this investigation,” O’Donaghey says.

Jakku's next court appearance is Feb. 8.
