Man accused of sending Winnipeg letter bombs still securing new lawyer
WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg man accused of sending letter bombs in the mail, including one that cost a lawyer her hand, is still trying to get a new defence lawyer.
Guido Amsel, who faces five counts of attempted murder, fired his lawyer last month and appeared briefly in court today with Saheel Zaman.
Zaman told court he was in the process of being retained, but there was still an issue to be worked out that he did not want to disclose in open court.
The case is set to return to court Oct. 7, but both Zaman and the Crown expect more time will be needed before a trial.
Amsel was arrested last year after letter bombs were sent to Amsel’s former wife and two Winnipeg law firms.
Two of the explosives were safely detonated, but one went off and seriously injured lawyer Maria Mitousis, who had represented Amsel’s ex-wife in the couple’s divorce.
