Report: Bus driver in crash with Hungary students survived
ROME – Italian news reports say the driver of a bus carrying Hungarian students that crashed in northern Italy on Jan. 20, killing 16 people, actually survived the crash.
The ANSA news agency says DNA tests identified one of the hospitalized survivors as a 52-year-old Hungarian who was believed to have been at the wheel at the time. He was one of two survivors whose identities weren’t known, presumably because their injuries were so severe. DNA tests were also necessary to identify the dead, since many were burned beyond recognition.
The bus slammed into a highway overpass support column in Verona and exploded. Thirty-nine people survived.
The information was contained in a police report delivered Monday to prosecutors investigating the crash. The driver has been placed under investigation, ANSA says.
