Next stage of downtown Penticton revitalization to get underway next week

PENTICTON – Preparations are underway for work to begin on a new phase of the revitalization in downtown Penticton.

The almost $2.2 million facelift to the 300 block of Main Street is expected to begin Feb. 14 as the city replaces aging infrastructure, according to a City of Penticton media release.

Over $1.6 million will be spent on new asphalt, raised intersections, sidewalks, curbs, water mains storm sewers, street lighting, traffic signals and underground electrical.

“While the city is upgrading infrastructure above and below ground, the property owners along the 300 block are also contributing $299,960 to the street scape and pedestrian experience improvements resulting in a cost effective way to continue the revitalization of downtown,” Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit says in the release.

Pedestrian access to the 300 block will remain open during the construction, which is expected to be complete by June 15.

Downtown revitalization began in 2014 with the 200 block of Martin Street, followed by revitalization of the 200 block of Main Street in the spring of 2016 and the 100 block of Main Street later that year.
