US abortions dropped 3 per cent in 2010, a continued but smaller decline vs. the previous year

ATLANTA – U.S. abortions have continued to decline, but not quite as steeply as before.

The number and rate of reported abortions fell 3 per cent in 2010, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Those statistics had fallen 5 per cent in 2009 — the biggest one-year decrease in a decade.

Before 2009, abortions seemed to have levelled off. Some experts attributed the recent numbers to better use of contraception and a tough economic environment for raising children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday released the latest statistics, drawing from about 45 states and cities that sent in data consistently for at least 10 years. They reported about 753,000 abortions in 2010. About 60 per cent of the women were in their 20s.
