Talk to the animals: Calgary Zoo fully reopens after flooding

CALGARY – The Calgary Zoo has fully reopened five months after it was shut down by major flooding in southern Alberta.

Hundreds of people cheered as Mayor Naheed Nenshi (nah-HEHD’ NEHN’-shee) ripped a banner saying the zoo is open for business.

Nenshi says the animal park is a major tourist attraction for Calgary and there are countless heroes who worked to keep the animals safe.

The zoo usually receives 1.3 million visitors a year.

The closure led to layoffs and the relocation of several animals to other zoos in North America.

The facility is in a flood plain, but Nenshi said it makes more sense to spend tens of millions to flood-proof it than hundreds of millions to relocate it.
