Accused’s ex-girlfriend helped him sell drugs, heard talk of shooting: trial
VANCOUVER – The former girlfriend of one of two men on trial for a gang killing that left six dead says she overheard associates of the two accused take credit for at least one shooting.
The woman, who can only be identified as K.M., is the latest witness at the trial of Cody Rae Haevischer and Matthew Johnston, who are each charged with six counts of first-degree murder for the October 2007 mass killing in Surrey, B.C.
K.M. says she met Haevischer in 2003, when she was working at a McDonald’s restaurant and he and Johnston were frequent drive-thru customers.
K.M. says she eventually met Haevischer’s associates in the Red Scorpions gang, and during an encounter one of them took credit for a recent shooting and another joked that, because she knew, they’d have to kill her.
In the spring of 2004, she says she was hired full-time to drive Haevischer to his crack cocaine deliveries around New Westminster, though she knew the gang also operated dial-a-dope phone lines for Coquitlam and Surrey.
Last week, another man pleaded guilty in the case. Michael Le admitted to a charge of conspiracy to commit murder and will be sentenced later this month.
