MONTERREY, Mexico – One inmate has been killed and eight injured in the latest uprising at a troubled prison in northern Mexico.
Josafat Quiroga Mendoza, security chief at Topo Chico prison, said the incident occurred in a common area Thursday morning and was controlled within 10 minutes.
The prison has been the site of other deaths this year. In June, three inmates were killed and in February 49 died when two factions of the Zetas cartel clashed.
Some of the prison’s administrators were arrested after the February riot. The prisoners effectively ran the lockup at that point. Authorities hauled out saunas, food stands, refrigerators and aquariums, as well as more than 200 weapons.
