Skaha Lake water study could benefit several water purveyors

PENTICTON – A small South Okanagan improvement district hopes the potential benefit of its water quality grant application to other water purveyors will help sway regional directors in favour of supporting it later this week.

The Kaleden Irrigation District applied recently for 50 per cent funding from the Okanagan Basin Water Board to support a source assessment of Skaha Lake.

The water board requires all grant applications to have a resolution supporting them from the organization’s local government.

The assessment is needed in order for the irrigation district to complete its source protection plan, part of an Interior Health requirement for the district’s operating permit.

The district has set aside $10,500 and is requesting matching funds from the water board, for the $21,013 study, which district manager Kevin Huey says will benefit other water purveyors who draw from Skaha Lake as well.

Okanagan Falls Irrigation District and other downstream users could potentially benefit from the study when they undergo similar studies of their own.

Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen’s Board of Directors are expected to vote on a recommendation of support at the March 1 regular board meeting.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
