Kelowna RCMP seek witnesses to collision

KELOWNA – An afternoon hit and run collision that sent two people to hospital yesterday has Kelowna RCMP seeking witnesses.

The incident occurred Feb. 26 around 1:47 at Highway 97 and Banks Road, police spokesperson Cpl. Lesley Smith said in a press release issued today.

A brown GMC Jimmy was travelling northbound when it drove through a red light and collided with a blue Jeep Cherokee, causing extensive damage to the front end and driver side of the vehicle.

Police arrived on scene to find the Kelowna Fire Department and B.C. Ambulance treating the female Cherokee driver and her young passenger, also a woman. They were both taken to Kelowna General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The GMC driver immediately fled the scene northbound on Highway 97, according to witnesses.

Police found the front license plate of the vehicle at the scene and traced it to an 80 year old man, who was taken to Kelowna General Hospital after police ascertained he was suffering from a medical episode.

Investigation into the crash continues. Police are asking anyone who might have witnessed the collision or might have recorded the incident on a dash cam to contact Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
