Expansion Ottawa Redblacks hire Rick Campbell as their first-ever head coach
OTTAWA – Rick Campbell is the first-ever head coach of the expansion Ottawa Redblacks.
The Redblacks, who will begin CFL play next season, made the announcement at a news conference this morning.
Campbell is a 15-year CFL coaching veteran but the Ottawa appointment is his first as a head coach.
But CFL coaching success is in his blood as Campbell is the son of legendary Edmonton Eskimos head coach and executive Hugh Campbell.
Rick Campbell has spent the last two years as Calgary’s defensive co-ordinator.
Calgary posted a CFL-best 63 sacks en route to posting a league-best 14-4 record this year.
But the Stampeders lost 35-13 to eventual Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan in the West Division final.
Campbell was mentioned as a leading candidate for Edmonton’s head-coaching job, which ultimately went to Toronto Argonauts defensive co-ordinator Chris Jones.
