Penticton home show weekend a hopeful sign spring isn’t far away

PENTICTON – The annual home show event taking place this weekend in Penticton should help focus thoughts on spring and home improvement projects, even if the weather isn’t providing similar encouragement.

The Canadian Home Builders Association South Okanagan 23rd annual Home and Renovation Show takes place at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre on Saturday, March 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, March 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It’s billed as the best home building and renovating show in the Okanagan at a cost of $4 at the door. For more information, see the Canadian Home Builders Association South Okanagan website.

For those intent on pursuing winter activities, the Mile High Challenge takes place on Saturday, March 3 starting at the Gunbarrel Saloon at Apex Mountain Resort.

The challenge is a race from the Gunbarrel to the top of the hill using your own power, whether that be on snowshoes, hiking boots, ski or snowboard boots.

Once at the top competitors ski back to the finish line on the Grandfathers Trail. The top three finishers in both men and women’s categories are up for cash prizes.

The event costs $30 to enter and starts at 2:30 p.m. For more information, visit the Apex website.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
