Suspected Kamloops impaired driver crashes into snow removal vehicle, tries to flee on foot
KAMLOOPS – An investigation is underway after a suspected impaire driver drove the wrong way on Highway 1, crashed into a parked snow removal vehicle, and attempted to run away.
Last night at approximately 11:30 p.m., March 4, Kamloops RCMP received a report that a man suspected of being impaired was leaving Cascades Casino on Versatile Drive, detachment spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release.
An officer was dispatched to the call, and while driving on Highway 1, saw the suspect vehicle travelling towards him in the wrong lane. After the vehicle passed, the officer did a u-turn and attempted to follow the suspect with lights and sirens on, Shelkie says.
Approximately 150 metres past the Columbia Street overpass, the suspect vehicle allegedly crashed into a parked highways vehicle involved in snow removal. The suspect driver then got out and attempted to run away, Shelkie says.
An employee of the highways crew attempted to detain the suspect by speaking with him until police arrived on scene, and he was taken into custody.
The suspect was taken to hospital for minor injuries from the crash. The driver of the highways vehicle was also taken to hospital for minor injuries.
Shelkie says alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash and an impaired driving investigation is ongoing.
