North Okanagan snowmobile incident claims life of Lumby man

LUMBY – A Lumby man is dead following a snowmobiling accident in the North Okanagan over the weekend.

On Sunday, March 4 police received an emergency signal in the backcountry area of Mabel Lake for a man who reportedly lost control of his snowmobile and landed in a creek, RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett says in a media release.

The man was with a group of friends who attempted to assist him, however he died as a result of his injuries, Brett says.

Members of Vernon Search and Rescue along with the RCMP assisted in the recovery effort.

“Sadly, despite the efforts of those performing CPR on scene, the male succumbed to his injuries,” Brett says. “This tragic event serves as yet another reminder of the risks associated to backcountry sports, regardless of your level of expertise and training.”

The man was positively identified as a 30-year-old Lumby resident.

The death is not suspicious in nature and the RCMP continue to work with the B.C. Coroners Service on the investigation, Brett says.
