Backcountry skier caught in South Okanagan avalanche

PENTICTON – Penticton Search and Rescue volunteers rescued an injured backcountry skier who had been caught in an avalanche near Apex Mountain Resort yesterday afternoon.

Randy Brown with search and rescue says they were called to a report of a 35-year-old man buried in an avalanche east of the resort at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4.

Four backcountry skiers, equipped with avalanche beacons — and fortunate to have good cell service — were able to dig out their buried partner while maintaining a communication link with rescue personnel, according to a Penticton Search and Rescue media release.

A rescue team was airlifted into the area where the injured skier was located and brought out to a road, where he was transferred to an ambulance. The unidentified skier’s injuries are not known, but not deemed to be life threatening.

The search and rescue volunteers coordinated the rescue efforts with staff at the ski resort and a Ministry of Transportation avalanche technician was able to assist in the evacuation.

Brown warns that the avalanche risk remains high and people should be prepared when venturing into the backcountry.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
