Regional district looking at expanded transit service between Penticton and Kelowna

PENTICTON – B.C. Transit is proposing an improvement to regional bus service between Penticton and Kelowna.

Currently bus service to Kelowna consists of a single trip operating on Mondays only.

B.C. Transit’s proposal would see two round trips per day on weekdays between Penticton and Kelowna, integrating with existing regional district services.

The provincial transit authority will approach the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board on March 15 to lay out a series of steps in a non-binding memorandum of understanding confirming the regional district’s willingness to proceed with the creation of the service.

The average cost per household for the service is estimated at between $1.33 and $4.11 per year, if all regional district members participate. The service would be established through the alternative approval process.

Funding from other partners is a possibility, as the bus route goes through Peachland and West Kelowna potentially providing benefit to those communities.

The timeline for implementation of the service would be September 2019.

The Penticton to Kelowna run was identified as a top priority in the 2015 regional district Transit Future Plan.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
