More affordable housing projects coming for Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – More relief is coming for the city's tight rental market.

Less than a month after officials announced 43 affordable housing units for seniors at Spirit Square, the City of Kamloops, B.C. Housing and the John Howard Society said another 52 units for low- to moderate-income singles and families has been approved for St. Paul Street and 5 Avenue.

“This development is one more step toward solving the issue of housing affordability and homelessness in Kamloops,” Mayor Ken Christian said in a media release. “The City will continue to look for opportunities to support affordable housing and enhance the lives of all of our residents.”

The announcement was actually initially made in 2015 for Royal Avenue, but it's taken this long to find a new location after the Royal Avenue project was deemed 'unsuitable'.

It will be operated by the John Howard Society. This project was made possible because council bought six lots in December 2017. B.C. Housing and the John Howard Society will build and manage the project.

The project is still in planning stages and construction isn't set to begin until 2019. Before then, neighbours will have an opportunity to learn more at a public meeting April 4 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bedford Manor Boardroom at 529 Seymour St.
