Unstable, dangerous ice on North Okanagan lake
VERNON – Ice skaters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts are being warned to watch their step on Swan Lake, just outside of Vernon.
The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Resource Operations is lowering the level of the lake as a precautionary measure to reduce the chance of spring flooding in BX Creek, and that could lead to changing ice conditions.
The ministry is concerned the lower water level may cause ice on the shoreline to become unstable and dangerous.
Lowering the level of Swan Lake happens every year, usually when the lake is free of ice, according to a media release. But because there is an above-average snowpack this year, the process was started earlier than usual.
Lowering the lake's level happens gradually, and will continue until inflows taper off, post-freshet, the ministry says.
