TORONTO – The cast of Toronto’s “Kinky Boots” can kick up their heels: the smash musical has nabbed a leading 10 Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations.
The recently wrapped Mirvish production, which featured music by pop star Cyndi Lauper, earned nods for production, direction, choreography and ensemble performance, and was also recognized in acting categories with nominations for AJ Bridel, Graham Scott Fleming and Alan Mingo Jr.
In the general theatre division, Tarragon Theatre leads with 12 overall nominations.
Tarragon’s production of “Mustard” garnered seven nominations, including outstanding new play. Canadian Stage’s “Botticelli in the Fire & Sunday in Sodom” also received seven nods in the general theatre division.
Why Not Theatre leads the independent theatre catgory with nine nominations, including eight nods for its production of “Butcher.”
The Canadian Opera Company was the frontrunner in the opera division, with its productions of “Siegfried” and “La Traviata” receiving eight nominations apiece.
Now into its 37th year, the Doras honour top Toronto talent in the performing arts, with categories also including dance and theatre for young audiences.
The awards will be handed out on June 27 at Harbourfront Centre’s Concert Stage.
