Rocket explodes with student experiments on board

KAMLOOPS – An experiment created by students from the Kamloops-Thompson School District was the second Canadian school project chosen to travel to the International Space Station but this week it instead went up in flames as the rocket exploded moments after lift off.

The student experiment, creating crystals in space by McGowan Elementary students, was one of 19 projects on the rocket as part of this edition of the School Spaceflight Experiments Program and was finally on the way to the space station after several weather-related delays.

Paul Hambling, the principal at Bert Edwards Science and Technology School, coordinated the district program. Grade 5-7 students across the district took part.
