Coroner confirms identity of Alberta man who died in B.C. avalanche

VANCOUVER – The coroners office has confirmed the identity of a 29-year-old Alberta snowboarder who died during an avalanche in eastern British Columbia.

Barb McLintock of the BC Coroners Service says Shane Leonard Schroeder was going down a slope in an out-of-bounds area of the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort near Golden, B.C., on Friday afternoon when the slide occurred.

McLintock says a friend who was with Schroeder couldn’t find the Edmonton man and called for help.

She says ski patrol and search-and-rescue members located Schroeder but they could not resuscitate him.

The coroners service and the RCMP are continuing their investigation into the death.

A posting on a Facebook page says friends plan to have stickers printed and placed at ski resorts around North America to commemorate Schroeder.
