SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Latest on a head-on crash that killed five people on Interstate 16 in southeast Georgia (all times local):

A relative of two people who died in a Georgia highway crash that killed five says his wife was driving her stepson to work when they were struck head-on by a car on Interstate 16.

Donald Vincent said Wednesday that his wife, 66-year-old Judy Johnson Vincent, and his 44-year-old son, Ronnie Bruce White, had left home in rural Eden early Wednesday. They were heading 22 miles into Savannah, where White had just taken a job with a roofer.

Vincent said his wife of 29 years was a devout woman who attended functions at her Baptist church three days a week. He said he and his son were fond of hunting, fishing and drinking beer together.

Authorities say five people are dead after a head-on crash between two cars on Interstate 16 west of Savannah.

The Georgia State Patrol says the crash happened Wednesday morning just before 6 a.m. near the city of Pooler.

The State Patrol said investigators suspect a Ford Mustang travelling west on I-16 crossed the median and smashed head-on into a Kia Soul in the eastbound lanes.

In a news release, the State Patrol said five people were killed — three in the Mustang and two in the Kia. There were no survivors in either vehicle.

Troopers are still investigating the crash, which shut down all eastbound lanes of I-16 heading into Savannah during rush hour Wednesday. The names of those killed were not immediately released.
