Deputy governor in intensive care after shooting in Brazil

SAO PAULO – A Brazilian deputy governor is in intensive care after a gun attack that also killed his party’s candidate for mayor of the small city of Itumbiara in the centre of the country.

Hospital HUGOL said Thursday that Goias state Deputy Gov. Jose Eliton was in stable condition after a gunman shot into a campaign motorcade.

Authorities say three people were killed in the attack Wednesday afternoon — the mayoral candidate, a policeman and the gunman, who was identified as a former city employee in Itumbiara.

More than 5,500 Brazilian cities will have elections for mayor and city council this weekend after a campaign season that has seen attacks on candidates in at least 12 states.
