The Latest: Anchorage police investigate shooting, crash

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Latest on a shooting and crash that closed lanes of one of Anchorage’s busiest streets (all times local):

8:30 a.m.

Anchorage police investigating a fatal two-car early crash Friday morning on a busy eastside street say a passenger in one of the vehicles had been shot.

Police say the person suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and that the shooting is “correlated” to the crash.

The crash occurred just after 3 a.m. on Fifth Avenue near Merrill Field.

A man was ejected from one of the vehicles in the crash and taken to an Anchorage hospital, where he died.

Fifth Avenue is one of the main routes to downtown Anchorage for drivers from Eagle River and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Lanes remained closed at 8:30 a.m.

Anchorage police closed lanes of one of the city’s busiest streets Friday as they investigated a fatal crash and a shooting.

Police just after 3 a.m. took a call of a two-car crash on east Fifth Avenue at Concrete Street near Merrill Field.

A man was ejected from one of the vehicles. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and he later died. The man has not been positively identified.

Police say they found evidence of a shooting in the same area.

They are trying to determine whether the shooting was a factor in the crash.

Police closed westbound lanes of Fifth Avenue from Karluk Street to Reeve Boulevard as they investigated.
