Four people rescued from container ship off Newfoundland were Swiss tourists
ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – One of the four people rescued from a container ship that had a crack in its hull south of Newfoundland says they were Swiss tourists on their way to the United States.
Richard Kummrow says he, his wife and another couple booked passage aboard the MSC Monterey as a cheap way to get to New Jersey.
The ship left France on Dec. 20 but experienced troubles Sunday morning, forcing the captain to issue a distress call.
Kummrow says there was a crack in the hull about eight metres above water level.
A helicopter was dispatched and rescued the four travellers, taking them to Portugal Cove South, about 135 kilometres south of St. John’s.
Kummrow, who has continued his journey to New Jersey, says it was an adventure he won’t forget.
Transport Canada is monitoring the ship, which is now in port at St. Mary’s Bay.
