Desert Dome reopens at Milwaukee, last of 3 domes to reopen
MILWAUKEE – The Desert Dome has reopened after undergoing safety work at the Mitchell Park Conservatory in Milwaukee.
The dome reopened Saturday, about a week ahead of schedule. It’s the first time since earlier this year that all three of the famous domes have been open.
The nearly 50-year-old glass-and-concrete domes closed in February because of falling concrete.
Mesh safety netting was installed in all three domes. But Domes Director Sandy Folaron tells WISN-TV (http://bit.ly/2frre2z ) the mesh is only temporary. Folaron says the mesh did not repair anything, “it simply made the domes safe.”
The iconic Milwaukee structures hold plants and flowers from all over the world. The National Trust for Historic Preservation recently included the Domes as among America’s “most endangered” historic places.
A grand reopening celebration is planned Dec. 1.
