Penticton RCMP recover stolen artwork

PENTICTON – A thief with a taste for the arts struck in Penticton on the weekend.

Penticton RCMP issued an alert Sunday for the public’s assistance in finding a missing piece of artwork after the sculpture went missing from its display location in Gyro Park.

The work, entitled “Hatbox Man” by Summerland artist Michael Hermesh was noticed missing around 11 a.m. Sunday morning, April 8.

Penticton RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth reported early Monday morning, April 9, the art had been recovered.

“At 9:20 p.m. last evening we received a call there was a suspicious item near the city hall deposit box. Upon police attendance the item was discovered to be the statue “Hatbox Man.” It appears to be undamaged and it is unknown who returned it,” Wrigglesworth said in a statement released Monday, April 9.
