Nephew of Sinaloa cartel leader killed in Mexico

MEXICO CITY – Authorities in the western Mexican state of Sinaloa say that one of two men shot dead was a nephew of a cartel leader.

The state Attorney General’s Office said in a statement Saturday that its investigation established that 42-year-old Edgar Juvanny Parra Zambada was a nephew of Sinaloa cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia.

Parra was riding in a car with another man Friday in Culiacan when they were shot by at least two assailants.

A bystander in another vehicle was hit by gunfire but survived.

The attack follows the kidnapping of at least one of the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Zambada is believed to run the Sinaloa cartel while the imprisoned Guzman awaits extradition to the U.S.
