Geotechnical report sheds light on North Okanagan landslide

VERNON – Soggy ground was the likely cause of a landslide earlier this week in Vernon.

That’s the finding of a geotechnical engineering report for Tuesday’s slide on Eastside Road, the City of Vernon says in a media release. The report says saturated ground conditions on a steep embankment located above the road likely led to the slide.

Meanwhile, debris from the landslide has been removed and temporary improvements have been completed to ensure the site is safe, the city says.

“We are currently preparing a plan to permanently stabilize and repair the embankment area where the slide occurred,” public works manager James Rice says in the release. “Work will likely occur within the next four to six weeks.”

One property was damaged by the slide and power was knocked out for numerous residents.

“City crews will continue to monitor road side ditches and culverts in this area to ensure drainage systems continue to function as intended,” the city says.
