UPDATE: Problem at Westside Road overpass explained

The Ministry of Transportation has the answer for why pavement under the Highway 97 at Ledcor Road was buldging during the afternoon commute Friday.

Public affairs officer Kate Trotter says a contractor was filling the abandoned sewer line under the highway with high slump concrete when the pressure built up allowing the concrete to breach an old manhole and fill the area under the pavement. 

"This heaved the highway pavement and caused a pronounced bump," Trotter stated in an email. "The centre lane was closed for traffic safety."

Trotter said the contractor then had to wait until Sunday for the concrete to harden before repairing the highway.

A 12×20 m section of highway 97 was reconstructed on Sunday and traffic this morning is flowing normally.

It's not a structural problem with the overpass; this time it's the pavement underneath.

A 40-foot oval bump has developed under the pavement at the overpass rising almost a foot high. Ledcor Road crews were attempting to discover the cause of it but one worker said it wasn't a water main, though it appears there was work on storm drains nearby.

Traffic was being re-routed around most of the bump. It's still unclear how long the incident will disrupt traffic.

In November 2011, the new overpass partially collapsed.
