People, pets safe after laundry room fire in Kelowna

KELOWNA – Three people and four cats are safe after a small house fire in Kelowna today.

Firefighters were called to the 2500 block of Sexsmith Road shortly before noon today, April 16, with reports of smoke coming from the rear of a home.

A media release from Platoon Capt. Kelly Stephens says crews were able to quickly knock down the fire, which started in the basement laundry room.

One adult, two teens and four cats were home at the time, but an alert from a smoke detector helped them get out safely.

The fire was contained to laundry room but due to smoke and water damage, the residents will be unable to return home and are in the care of Emergency Support Services.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

The Kelowna Fire Department would like to remind the public to check your smoke detectors regularly.
