UN calls on Kenya to reconsider closing refugee camps
The United Nations is calling on Kenya to reconsider its decision to close two refugee camps that have been home to hundreds of thousands of people for nearly a quarter century.
Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Tuesday that the U.N. is calling on Kenya’s government to avoid any action that is at odds with its international obligations.
The Kenyan government announced Friday it would close the camps, including one of the world’s largest, due to a lack of security and economic challenges.
Dujarric added that “any such decision should not be taken in haste when you’re talking about the lives of 600,000 people.”
The camps targeted for closure are Daadab, hosting more than 328,000 mainly Somali refugees, and Kakuma, hosting 190,000 mostly South Sudanese refugees, fleeing civil war.
