40th anniversary of Diane Von Furstenberg’s wrap dress celebrated with exhibit, starry party

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – It takes a pretty special dress to merit its own star-studded anniversary party.

The wrap dress, designed in the early 1970s by Diane Von Furstenberg, was the guest of honour Friday at the opening of the designer’s “Journey of a Dress” exhibit in Los Angeles. Demi Moore, Tobey Maguire, Marisa Tomei, Edward Norton and Joe Jonas were among the many stars celebrating the enduring design that fastens with a simple tie at the waist.

The exhibit features the designer’s favourite dresses from throughout the decades, along with new creations based on vintage styles and fabrics. There are also paintings and portraits of Von Furstenberg from artists such as Andy Warhol and Annie Leibovitz.

“Journey of a Dress” is on view until April 1 at the Wilshire May Company Building.
