A list of how some Canadian cities rank for greenhouse gas emissions

VANCOUVER – A University of British Columbia study estimated average household greenhouse gas emissions in major cities across Canada between 1997 and 2009. The calculations were based on factors such as weather, population density and the type of energy used for home heating and electricity.

Here’s how the cities ranked per year — from lowest average emissions per household to highest (includes electricity, gasoline and natural gas):

— Montreal: 5.4 tonnes

— Vancouver: 7.2 tonnes

— Winnipeg: 8.1 tonnes

— Toronto: 9.6 tonnes

— Regina: 16.3 tonnes

— Calgary: 18.2 tonnes

— Edmonton: 20.7 tonnes
