Albanian police arrest four over airport heist

TIRANA, Albania – Albania police say they have arrested four suspects over the theft of some 5 million euros ($5.6 million) from a passenger plane at the country’s only international airport.

In a statement Monday, they said three people were arrested in the central Albanian town of Elbasan. Another was arrested in the northern town of Kruje.

Earlier this month, the thieves took the cash as it was loaded onto an Austrian Airlines plane. One robber was shot dead in an exchange of fire with police, but the cash has not been recovered.

Military police and police have installed a security perimeter and also run the airport’s internal security, which has been managed by a private company.
