PORTLAND – The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Kelowna Rockets 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night in Portland, handing the Rockets just its second loss of the season.
Paul Bittner scored midway through the overtime period to give Portland the win in a fast-paced game, the second straight in Portland for the Rockets who won 5-0 Thursday.
Rockets rookie Devante Stephens scored his first WHL goal in the third period, tying the game 2-2 with eight minutes to play in the period, sending the game to overtime and giving the Rockets three of a possible four points in Portland.
Rourke Chartier had opened the scoring for Kelowna, with his 12th of the season, the highest goal tally in the WHL.
Jackson Whistle had another solid night in net for the Rockets, who were outshot 24-16 through two periods, but turned it around in the third, outshooting Portland 17-10 in the final frame.
The Rockets fell to 13-1-1-0 on the season, heading into a Sunday afternoon tilt against the Vancouver Giants (5 p.m.).
Kelowna returns to Prospera Place on Wednesday to host BC Division rival Victoria.
