MELBOURNE, Australia – Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Croatia’s Mate Pavic will not defend their Australian Open mixed doubles title.
The top seeds lost 6-1, 4-6, 11-9 to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain and Neal Skupski of the United Kingdom in a quarterfinal on Wednesday.
Pavic hit a smash wide on match point to end it. He called for a review, which showed it was just out.
Dabrowski, an Ottawa native, was looking for her third career Grand Slam mixed doubles title and her second with Pavic.
The pair won the Australian Open last year and lost in the French Open final.
Dabrowski lost in the first round of women’s doubles at this year’s Australian Open with partner Yifan Xu of China.
