SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Police say a man who allegedly tried to rob a San Juan home was killed in an exchange of gunfire with one of the residents. A second suspect was shot and was hospitalized in critical condition.
Officers said Saturday that two males armed with pistols broke into the home Friday night and tried to steal jewelry from two women inside. They tied up 64-year-old Janina Valentin and threatened her 90-year-old mother Fulgencia Flores at gunpoint.
A police report says the men demanded the house keys from Valentin’s husband, Waldemar Lopez, who was able to arm himself with a licensed revolver and an exchange of gunfire ensured.
Police did not provide Lopez’s age.
The dead man was identified as 20-year-old Jonathan Roman Padilla.
