MONTREAL – Midifelder Ignacio Piatti underwent hand surgery Friday and will be out action for two to three weeks, Montreal Impact coach Mauro Biello said.
Piatti, who leads the team and is among the Major League Soccer leaders with eight goals in 13 games, suffered ligament damage to a thumb in a fall during a game May 21 against Orlando but continued to play. The time was right for the surgery because it comes during a break in the MLS schedule.
The Argentine designated player will miss the return leg of the Amway Canadian Championship on Wednesday night at Saputo Stadium. Montreal dropped a 4-2 decision in the opening leg at Toronto.
Piatti may be back for the team’s next league game June 18 in Columbus.
