Avalanche southeast of Prince George kills one person

VALEMOUNT, B.C. – An avalanche in eastern B.C. has claimed the life of a man.

RCMP say Saturday’s slide was triggered at Goat Ridge in the Clemina creek-area off Highway 5, 30 kilometres south of the community of Valemount.

Police say they received a distress beacon mid-day Saturday and dispatched search and rescue teams.

Police say several snowmobilers were in the area and told them one person was buried and dead.

Avalanche technicians say conditions were too dangerous to recover the body and the B.C. Coroner’s Service won’t be able to get into the area until it’s deemed safe.
