Kelowna moving company ordered to pay for damaged furniture

KELOWNA – A Calgary man was awarded just over $500 for damage caused by a Kelowna moving company.

According to court documents, John Broschak hired That Guy Vanlines to move household belongings from Calgary to Kelowna in July 2015.

Broschak paid $2850.75 as well as a $35.00 insurance charge to the company for the move, which began July 24 and concluded Aug. 1, 2015.

On Aug. 4 he contacted them saying items were damaged and requested an insurance form. He claimed that a $400 stereo stand was missing, a leather sofa was torn and stained, a $300 coffee table was badly scratched and $100 chair was missing a bottom piece.

The tribunal ordered the company to pay him $50 for the sofa, and $25 for the damage to the 30-year-old TV stand, $300 to replace the Huppe coffee table and $125 in tribunal fees.

“The applicant’s claim for replacement costs does not factor in the age and condition of the property in question," the decision says.
