Thieves ram Paris Chanel store with car, make off with bags

PARIS – French police officers say thieves have driven a vehicle into a Chanel store in central Paris just before dawn, crashing through the boutique’s shutters and setting the car ablaze as they made off with an unspecified number of luxury handbags.

Officers at the scene said the raid occurred Thursday at around 5:30 a.m. (0330 GMT; 11:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday). A Paris police spokesman declined to answer questions about the incident. A Chanel representative didn’t return a message seeking comment.

The French capital has seen a series of brazen raids targeting high-end retailers in recent years.
