Family says Egyptian-Canadian journalist held in Egypt may have to go on trial

The family of an Egyptian-Canadian journalist imprisoned in Cairo has been told he is no longer being investigated for links to a terrorist group, but his troubles are far from over.

Mohamed Fahmy’s family says the 40-year-old is still being interrogated on allegations of broadcasting false news and transmitting that information to CNN — his former employer.

Fahmy was working for satellite news broadcaster Al-Jazeera English when he and two co-workers were arrested on Dec. 29.

Although none have been officially charged, Fahmy’s brother says the prosecutor’s office indicated the Egyptian-Canadian’s case will likely be heading to trial.

Sherif Fahmy says the news was shocking as his brother and Al Jazeera have vehemently denied all the allegations against him.

Mohamed Fahmy will find out at an interrogation hearing on Saturday if his detention will be extended by another 15 days.
