Man sentenced for Stanley Cup riot role almost a year after downtown mayhem

VANCOUVER – A Surrey, B.C., man has been sentenced to a month in jail for his role in the Stanley Cup riot a year ago.

Twenty-year-old Emmanuel Alviar pleaded guilty in March to participating in a riot.

Seven other people have pleaded guilty to various offences including mischief, break and enter and assaulting a police officer in the downtown Vancouver riot last June 15.

Rioters busted windows, looted stores and set cars on fire after the Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals.

About 200 people now face charges after the mayhem that made international headlines.

Police say they expect more charges to be laid. (CKNW)
