Toronto Film Fest gives ultimatum to movie studios on premieres
TORONTO – The Toronto International Film Festival is cracking down on movie studios that break a promise to premiere their films at the festival.
TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey said Wednesday a film shown during the first four days of the festival will have to be a world or North American premiere or they will be bumped to the fifth day or later of the Sept. 4-14 festival.
Bailey says they were annoyed when Fox Searchlight’s “12 Years a Slave,” debuted at Colorado’s Telluride Film Festival despite being promised a world premiere at Toronto.
Bailey, who returned from Los Angeles this week, says they want to make sure that when they stand on stage and say it’s a premiere it really is.
The Telluride festival has increasingly premiered films just ahead of Toronto.
