Romania’s Jewish State Theater badly damaged by snowstorms, plays cancelled

BUCHAREST, Romania – Plays have been suspended at Bucharest’s Jewish State Theater after snow badly damaged the roof, flooding the stage and the cellar.

Literary secretary Edith Negulici said Thursday parts of the roof over an area of 80 metres had been stripped off by blizzards over the weekend, and snow and ice leaked into the building.

The theatrecancelled four plays this week, including “Key for Two” by John Chapman and Dave Freeman, which should have run Thursday.

The theatre, which has launched an appeal for funds to repair the building, started in 1876 and has played an important part in Romanian cultural life. The current theatre in Bucharest was first used in the 1930s and was nationalized in 1948 when the communists came to power.
